A-Z of fishing - Equipment

Equipment

As we all know, your tackle / equipment is the weaponry we use to go to battle. It assists you in getting your bait in the wright spot, attracting the fish, fighting the battle and landing the fish. So let’s take a closer look at "EQUIPMENT".

ROD & REEL
The importance of this cannot be stressed enough. You need to take more time and sometimes professional advice to ensure that you buy a balance set of rods and reels.
First you need to look at the best rod to compliment the venue or target area (river / dam fishing). Also ensure that the rod will assist you in getting your bait to the selected spot. So the test curve and length is very important. Your rod must help you in playing the fish. So the test curve will assist in allowing slack when you need it or backbone when you need to pull.
Your reel should be in balance with your rod (size). It must accommodate enough line and have a proper drag system.

LINE
Monofilament is without equal the best line to use (proven over years). The stretch capability it crucial when fighting your fish. it also allows great casting distance and more. Just ensure that your line accommodate good knot strength, low memories and abrasive resistance.
The colour of the line do not play any role besides the leader part that connects to your trace. This must be as invisible as possible in water.
When it comes to line strength, you can fill your reel with 10lb max. Then add a leader line of 24lb. The role of the leader is to assist in the casting and also in the moment when you want to land your fish. If the line on your reel exceeds a 15lb difference to the leader line, you must "STEP" the two lines. This means you must add a carrier line of 1 meter between the two line. The "step" line will help control the thinner line as its dragged for the spool by the heavier leader line. So less breakage when casting.

LANDING NET / KEEPNET
We need to practice a safe and fish friendly way of landing and keeping your fish. So ensure that you buy equipment made from knot less material.

NB!!!   Equipment must compliment your fishing efforts and put you in the best position to catch fish
